History of the Band
Imagine Britain
in the 1950's and 60's, everything in black and white, pounds shillings
and pence, feet and inches, post-war austerity, the cold war, Philby, Burgess
& Maclean, the Profumo affair, the Quiller memorandum, Harry Palmer,
IPCRESS, Sputnik, the space race, atomic power, Suez, rock and roll, fast
cars & loose women (or loose cars & fast women if you were unlucky),
Diana Doors, coffee bars, milky bars, waggon wheels, the mini skirt, winkle
pickers, teddy boys, mods and rockers, cafe racing, organised crime, the
Krays, the great train robbery, Ready Steady Go, the Avengers, Mrs Peel,
Mrs Peel in black leather cat suit, cat suits, cat woman, go go dancers,
boutiques, youth clubs, radios Caroline and Luxembourg, transistor radios,
radiograms, 45 rpm vinyl records, Spotty Dog, Hard Bop, the Prisoner, the
Saint, Dangerman, Ted Heath orchestra, Stan Kenton, the Goons, Ealing comedies
etc. etc.. This was the world into which the Skalinskis were born - direct
decendents of people already alive - and that just about explains
it really.
At some point
later they all end up in Stoke on Trent (a sort of English equivilent of
a cross between the more industrial parts of the Gdansk Shipyards and the
less forward thinking parts of Albania) and formed the FABULOUS SKALINKSIS.
They could not have evolved anywhere else - Guildford don't skank. The
rest is now history, albeit unwritten history, but history none the
less.
'Isms that people havent even
thought of yet
Our music is a
celebration of the so called seemier side of life: at one time or another
we all tell lies, cheat on partners, wives, husbands, are cheated on, fall
in love with the unobtainable, reject and are rejected for who we are and
who we are not, find our lover in bed with someone else, drink too much,
too often, for too long, indulge in unusual physical pleasures (ok maybe
that's just me), imagine (or even find out) what its like to buy and sell
certain "favours", then go to work and sell ourselves anyway, live a dissolute
decadent lifestyle, idling away the best years of our lives, come to terms
with what we havent done and what we will never do. Most adults will experience
most of these at some point.
We are adults,
we write and sing about adult things.
We celebrate
these, because they are part of life and there is no law to say sad things
must be put into sad songs. Its not a crime to have a good time, yet!
